Phase 2

A £10 million extension to the Superfast South Yorkshire programme saw the SFSY team working with Openreach to bring Full Fibre ‘ultrafast’ (also known as Fibre to the Premises, FTTP, Fibre to the Home, FTTH, or Gigabit-capable,) connections to over 9,000 homes and businesses across the region, providing speeds of up to 1 Gigabit (1Gbps), 24 times faster than the UK average of 46Mbps.

With detailed planning and survey work already underway the first Full Fibre connections will be live for 2020. Over 9,000 properties will be fully connected by spring 2021. We will be collating a list of frequently ask questions to publish in 2019.

Planning for Phase 2 began with the launch of a Public Consultation in June 2017, full details of which can be found on the page linked below:

Current coverage

South Yorkshire has one of the highest Superfast broadband coverage rates in the country, with over 99% of residents and businesses having access to broadband speeds of 30Mbps or above.

For the most current coverage statistics visit ThinkBroadband where you can check coverage nationally down to your local constituency.

The availability of gigabit capable broadband (broadband speeds of 1gbps/1000mbps,) in the South Yorkshire region stands at 86.67%, as of March 2024. This means we have already achieved the government's target of 85% gigabit-capable coverage by 2025, but that does not mean work will stop  there.
